Frequently Asked Questions

What is a synonym?

A synonym is a word with the same or nearly the same meaning as another word. For example, "big" and "large" are synonyms. Songwriters use synonyms to find words that match a meaning while also fitting a specific syllable count, rhyme, or tone.

How is this thesaurus different from a regular one?

Every synonym on RHYMEBOOK links directly to its full rhyme page, syllable count, and related word lists. You can swap in a synonym that shares a rhyme ending, matches your meter, or starts with a specific letter — all in one click.

Where does the synonym data come from?

Our thesaurus is built on Princeton WordNet 3.1 (BSD license), the most widely-used lexical database of English. We supplement it with rhyme and syllable data from our 5.8M-word phonetic dictionary.

Can I find synonyms in languages other than English?

Currently the synonym database covers English only. Our rhyme dictionary supports 24 languages — switch languages there for rhymes in French, Spanish, Arabic, and more.
