Focaliser
Definition
In hip-hop linguistics and narrative rap analysis, a focaliser is the narrative agent—often the rapper, a character, or implied perspective—through which story events are filtered, shaping the listener's viewpoint, emotions, and understanding, akin to literary focalization theory applied to bars and verses.
Used in lyrics
“'I'm the focaliser in this hood opera, see the pain through my lens, no reporter' – illustrative of Kendrick Lamar's 'good kid, m.A.A.d city' narrative style.”
“'Focaliser locked on the bag, vision tunneled, opps in the rearview drag' – example echoing JAY-Z's blueprint-era introspection in 'The Story of O.J.'”
“'Through the youngin' focaliser, the block look infinite, dreams microscopic' – hypothetical bars in the vein of Nas' 'One Mic' storytelling.”
“'She the focaliser now, heart broke, replayin' scenes in slow-mo' – rap romance trope as in Drake's 'Marvins Room' emotional pivot.”
“'Zero focaliser, god view, watchin' empires crumble from above' – battle rap flex like Eminem's 'Stan' omniscient shifts.”
